Reykjavik
Having gained independence from Norway in 1944, Iceland is heavily reliant on tourism. Known as the Land of Fire and Ice due to being one of the most active volcanic countries in the world and her glaciers. While here take in the various museums, art galleries and shops. If you do want to relax take time out to visit the geothermal springs at the Blue Lagoon.
Bergen
A town surrounded by 7 mountains, Bergen is unique. it has a charm and vibrancy due to the colourful wooden houses and old alleyways and streets, which begged to be discovered. Main sights include the bustling fish market, the 18th century Bryggen Wharf which is one of Norway’s World Heritage Sites and the 12th century St Mary Church which is the oldest building in Bergen.
Honningsvag
Claiming to be the most northerly city in Europe, Honningsvag gives access to the North Cape. Home to the Lapp population and their herds of reindeer, who tend to them, largely unchanged as they have for centuries. Take a trip to the visitor centre and learn about the four seasons of the Cape and its history.
Flaam/Flam
A pretty little town, Flaam is surrounded by steep mountains and the waters of the Sognefjord. Most peoples starting point is the Flamsbana, one of the Worlds most unique railways. Climbing 900 metres through tunnels that spiral inside the mountain, this 20 kilometre railway offers breathtaking views. Excursions for this are always popular and it is highly recommended to book in advance so you are not disappointed.
Longyearbyen
For most people the main highlight here is the possibility of seeing polar bears in their natural environment along with the various other species of wildlife which this area is famous for, including seals, walruses and countless seabirds. Established only just over 100 years ago to take advantage of the local coal reserves, Longyearbyen is the largest settlement on the island of Spitsbergen, part of the Svalbard archipelago.
At what time to travel?
A relatively short main season, ranging from late May to mid August, enjoying a similar weather pattern to us. In midsummer some areas have 24 hours of daylight making a unique experience, gaining the name the Land of the Midnight Sun. However if you are wanting to travel in search of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) then winter is the best time.
