Puerto Amador
The gateway to Panama City for many, with the chance to sample its rich and turbulent history. Once you get behind the tall modern skyscrapers there is a variety of ruins; churches and convents, colonial palaces, bridges and military buildings all a reminder of Old Panama and its grandiose past. If you want to stay closer to the canal, take the Panama Canal Railway which was the northern hemispheres first transcontinental railroad, which passes Gatun Lake and the isthmus' dense rainforest, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will tell you all about the Canal, the Railway and Panamanian history in general.
Puntarenas
A leading port of Costa Rica, Puntarenas is a great place to see a variety of flora and fauna in the lush rainforest along with various volcanoes. Or travel on the Pan American Highway to San Jose and take in the landmark National Theatre, Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Museum, Costa Rica's most important historical museum, housed in a former army barracks that was the scene of fighting during the civil war of 1948. Notice the bullet-riddled stone walls. The museum is home to a vast collection of archaeological and historic artefacts, including a display of replicas and original pieces from the city's gold museum.
Cartagena
Most people would just think of coffee when Columbia is mentioned but Cartagena will prove there is so much more to it. The old walled city itself is rich in colonial Spanish buildings and reminders: see the city at a leisurely pace by taking a horse drawn carriage for something a bit different. The area was also an important military base for the Spanish back in the 17th century and for those interested you can visit the magnificent Fort of San Felipe.
Cabo San Lucas
Whether its whale watching, swimming with dolphins, riding horse back along a Pacific Ocean beach, a catamaran through the bay or a 4x4 desert drive, you will be spoilt for choice here. If you want to experience a more local way of life then head to the oasis town of Todos Santos also famously home to the Hotel California which was immortalised in the song of the same name by The Eagles. There is so much to choose from you will wish you had more time here.
At what time to travel?
The majority of cruises operate early autumn, through winter and into late spring, and use the transit as a repositioning journey between their Caribbean and Mexican itineraries. As it’s so close to the Equator, this is the best time to visit and out of the typical wet season.
Other ports of call’s include:
San Juan Del Sur, Colon, Huatulco, Acapulco, Puerto Quetzal.
