Honolulu
If you want to go beyond the sun and surf (given this is the birth place of surfing) then for a more poignant memory take in Pearl Harbour and the USS Arizona and Missouri memorials. For more native heritage take in Iolani Palace, this was home to Hawaii’s last 2 monarchs, King Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani. Or Queen Emma’s Summer Palace, the country retreat of Kamehameha IV and his consort Queen Emma.
Bora Bora
Think of paradise and you would picture Bora Bora. Surrounded by perfect blue waters and a coral reef, most of the islands charms lay beneath the water. Exploring this underwater world is easy, whether you scuba dive or snorkel, helmet dive or in a submersible no-one should miss it. For those that do prefer the land Bora Bora was home to the US military’s South Pacific supply base during WWII and remnants, such as 7-inch cannons, can still be found at the naval gun sites. If you are looking for a souvenir to take home, try one of the pearl boutiques where you will find the famous Polynesian pearls.
Papeete
Most highlights are based around nature on this idyllic island destination, some only accessible by 4x4 vehicles, such as the Faarumai Valley which contains one of the most photographed and beautiful waterfalls on Tahiti. Also the Arahoho Blowhole, with waves crashing through the volcanic basalt rock creating this famous natural feature. The island is also home to the Gauguin Museum, which recreates the life of celebrated Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, featuring his sketches and a sculpture.
Hilo
Home to Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park, where you can see unique smooth and jagged lava rock flows, sulphur banks and lava beds. But bear in mind that tradition and legend states that it is bad luck to take away pieces of lava rock. There are also so many other natural sights to see it would be hard to mention them all: waterfalls, rivers, botanical gardens, caves to mention a few. If you are looking for something more adventurous then try kayaking, snorkelling or even a helicopter ride over the Volcanoes National Park.
Apia
The capital and only city of Samoa, Apia is the former home of the novelist Robert Louis Stevenson and he is now buried nearby and his former residence, Vailima, is now a small museum with well maintained gardens and decorated with authentic period furnishings. Outside of the city, you leave modern life behind as the local villages have hardly changed.
