North America Cruises - Ports of call

New York

With so many iconic sights and landmarks, it’s a case of where to start in the city that never sleeps? Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Broadway, Madison Square Garden…. The list goes on and on. It would be well worth extending your stay to get it all fitted in and that’s without the shopping, dining, galleries and museums.

Quebec

This French influenced city has such a rich history it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay within the city for Place Royale, Château Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace and Cap-Diamant or travel further out for the Laurentian Mountains or to the 272-foot high Montmorency Falls which cascade into the St Lawrence River, or even visit one of the local wineries. If you are staying in port overnight, how about a lantern lit ghost walk to learn about the 300 years of murders, executions, mysterious ghost sightings, tragedies and haunting.

Portland

Voted as one of America’s most ‘liveable’ cities this modern urban hub of Maine’s south coast region is a progressive and dynamic city but yet still carries its yesteryear charm and character. From here you can experience one of the world’s greatest railway journeys: The Cog Railway, the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway that will take you above the clouds of Mount Washington. For a trip on the ocean, which is a huge part of Portland life, take an authentic wooden schooner, an ideal way to experience the beauty of Maine's rugged coastline featuring lighthouses, seals and seabirds.

Saint John

Founded in 1785 by Loyalists escaping the Revolutionary War, Saint John is a quaint waterfront town and famed for its natural beauty. A sight not to be missed is the Reversing Rapids: twice daily the powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy rise faster than the river can empty. When this happens, the mighty tides push the river water upstream, causing the rapids to run in the opposite direction and the St. John River to flow backwards. For those wanting a thrill ride, take a white knuckle jet boat where you will experience the powerful whirlpools swirling about and waves towering as high as 10 feet up close.

Halifax

Two of Halifax’s most popular sites are Peggy’s Cove, a picturesque village dating back to 1811, with its famous lighthouse and the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, which is the largest burial ground for victims of the Titanic, other than the ocean herself. 121 victims are buried here as the ship tragically sunk just 750 miles off shore from Halifax. Most of the victims are memorialized with a small grey granite marker giving their name and date of death. The occupants of a third of the graves, however, have sadly never been identified and their markers contain just their date of death and marker number.

At what time to travel?

Cruises sail from late spring through to late autumn but the most popular time to visit is the ‘fall’, when the glorious autumn colours come into full flourish and whales migrate in these Atlantic waters.

Other ports of calls include:

Boston, Bar Harbour, Sydney, Charlottetown, Saguenay.
