Dubai
Probably the most visited of the Gulf cities, it offers more than just shopping and beaches. The world famous gold souk is a worthwhile visit even if you are not planning to buy just for the experience, however if you are buying remember to haggle as it is expected and prices are marked to take this into account. For the more adventurous go out to the desert for 4x4 dune safaris or sand boarding. Dubai is also home to world renowned golf courses and Ski Dubai, the world’s largest indoor snow park.
Muscat
Located on the Red Sea, this is on a tiny coastal area of Jordan. Aqaba is the gateway to one of the most impressive sites in the world. Petra, known as the rose-red city is often referred to as the eighth wonder of the ancient world. Rediscovered by a Swiss archaeologist in 1812, Petra is approached through a narrow, six-foot wide Siq (gorge) with rock faces on either side, rising to the equivalent height of a four storey building. Temples, tombs, and theatres emerge from the cliffs, giving an insight to the life of the Edomites, whose capital city this was in 300BC.
Aqaba
Situated on the spectacular Gulf of Oman, this ancient capital is backed by dramatic and rugged mountains and still relatively undiscovered by tourists. Whilst here take in the magnificent Royal Palace, Muttrah souk and also the breathtaking Grand Mosque, which allows entry to non-muslin men and women, with its polished marble, hand-made carpets and dazzling chandeliers.
Safaga
Located on the opposite side of the Nile to Luxor it is possible to take an excursion to see the ancient Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, at Thebes, with their lavish tombs, temples and palaces. The magnificent Karnak Temple is home to rich, detailed wall paintings showing the unworldly lives of the Pharaohs and is truly awe-inspiring. Safaga is also close to the clear watered beach resort of Hurghada, with some of the world’s best dive sites.
At what time to travel?
A sun worshippers paradise, day temperatures rarely get below 20C but during the peak summer months they rise so high most would find them almost unbearable hence most cruise lines visit during from the autumn to spring which allows for more comfortable sightseeing. It is also worth noting that evening temperatures can drop quite dramatically so do remember to take a jacket.
