Barcelona
One of the easiest ports to do your own thing, with the port only 300 metres away from the start of Las Ramblas. Barcelona is a vibrant, eclectic city famed for its glitzy boutiques, Gaudi surrealist art and gothic architecture, but if all the sightseeing and shopping seems too much, the city has its own beach on which you can just wile away the day people watching.
Rome (Civitavecchia)
Rome is a must do on most peoples list. With sights including the Colosseum, dating from 72AD and the Roman forum, this ancient city is so full of history you can almost feel it. If you have time take a trip to the Vatican, which was founded in 90AD, for most people it will be a once in a lifetime experience.
Venice
This truly unique city is simply impressive in so many ways. With very few roads the canal system is the main way to get around other than by foot, whether you use the motorised water taxis or the more romantic gondolas it is a rare experience either way. It is not only the waterways that are impressive, the buildings and architecture are as well, with their mix of Moorish, Renaissance and Byzantine styles.
Athens (Piraeus)
The Greek capital is a bustling city, mixing the modern with the ancient. The main draw for most people travelling to Athens is the Parthenon at the Acropolis, the ancient ‘high city’, which was built back in 438BC and the Plaka, which is loaded with archaeological sites both large and small including the Tower of the Winds, an ancient meteorological station from the first century.
Istanbul
Formally Constantinople, Istanbul is one of the Worlds most exotic cities, straddling both Europe and Asia on the banks of the Bosphorus. Highlights of your time here include the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace. Once a major hub on ancient trading routes, Istanbul hasn’t lost its touch if you want to purchase a few gifts or reminders: hand-printed fabrics, spices, jewellery and of course Turkish delight.
Other ports of calls include:
Alexandria, Dubrovnik, Tripoli, Palma, Tunis, Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Cannes/Monte Carlo, Ajaccio.
