Mumbai
This fascinating port of call has much to offer: take in the Prince of Wales museum, the 100 year old Taj Palace Hotel and the majestic Gateway of India. For a slice of the local way of life visit the wash house, where local people still go to do their washing by hand which many may find a culture shock, but worth the experience. If you want to escape the city, take the boat over to Elephanta Island, to see the six metre tall Shiva Sculpture, at the centre of a labyrinth of cave temples.
Seychelles
The Seychelles were first recorded by the Portuguese discoverer Vasco da Gama at the beginning of the 16th century. At this time, the islands were known as the Amirantes, after Admiral da Gama himself. Still relatively unknown to British tourists and seen as a luxury destination, this archipelago offers a wealth of nature and culture. Home to the Coco-de-Mer palms, giant tortoises, over 200 species of fish and 150 types of coral, naturalists will be in their element.
Mauritius
An island tour is essential for those that want to make the most of their visit. Take in sugar cane plantations, Flacq Market: the largest on the island and the numerous perfect beaches. For a piece of island history make your way to Vieux Grand Port, the oldest settlements in Mauritius, where you can see the ruins of the first Dutch fortifications or The Martello Towers which represent the scene of the ancient rivalry between old colonial powers and the ingenuity of mankind. They are a milestone in the island’s history; they symbolise the end of slavery and the beginning of Indian immigration.
Colombo
The capital city of Sri Lanka and the starting point for the islands many experiences. Known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has more to offer than just beaches. Whether it is temples, archaeological treasures, tea plantations or the famed elephant orphanage there is more to discover for all tastes. Be reminded of the British rule at Nuwara Eliya, where the famous tea is grown and produced or visit Galle, Sri Lanka’s symbol of the link to the Netherlands and the Dutch Fort which was built to withstand enemy cannonballs and with a number of important churches within its walls.
