Singapore
A clean and safe metropolis, the most westernised of the Asian cities. Singapore offers history alongside world class shopping. Orchard Road is the Oxford Street of Singapore, with its designer shops, all at a fraction of UK prices. Another of the city’s famous landmarks is Raffles Hotel: enjoy an elegant afternoon tea or simply people watch while enjoying a legendary Singapore Sling.
Hong Kong
Modern skyscrapers and neon signs overlook traditional markets and junks bobbing in the harbour: Hong Kong is a mix of old and new. For the best view of the city, take the tram up Victoria Peak, this 8 minute journey opens up to the best view over the city and harbour. Take a wander down Nathan Street with its neon lights part of modern Hong Kong, or visit one of over 350 temples within the city for a touch of the ancient.
Koh Samui
Off the coast of mainland Thailand, this island hide-away has become a destination in itself. Boasting palm fringed beaches that dreams are made of, sleepy villages and banana plantations; Samui really is a place to getaway from it all. If you would like to do more than lay back and enjoy the paradise, the Chaweng beach area offers local shops trading everything from souvenirs to electrical goods.
Nha Trang
This Vietnamese gem is known for pristine beaches with excellent scuba diving facilities. Or if you would like to use a bit more energy, climb the Ponagar Cham Tower for superb views. This ancient temple tower was founded sometime prior to 781AD and is dedicated to the goddess of Vietnam, Yan Po Nagar, a 1.2 metre stone statue is the main temple’s feature with her sitting cross-legged, dressed only in a skirt, with ten hands holding various symbolic items.
Shanghai
A young and trendy city with an eye for fashion and luxury goods, earning the name ‘Oriental Paris’. The main sights within the city are the Yuyuan Gardens: the largest of the city’s ancient gardens with a mix of Ming and Qing architectural styles and the Jade Buddha Temple: with white jade Buddha’s, brought from Burma in the 19th century. If you want to escape the city take in the neighbouring water towns, where ancient buildings line the rivers which run through them. With a slower, local pace of life they are quite a contrast to the bustle of the city.
At what time to travel?
Weather conditions vary greatly just like in Europe. The cooler North like Korea and Japan require jackets and even jumpers at certain times of year, whereby the tropical Southern areas of Malaysia and Indonesia are ideal beach getaways.
Other ports of calls include:
Keelung, Bali, Penang, Yokohama, Manila, Phuket, Langkawi, Tianjin.
