Guide to Cruising?
According to cruise specialists, well over 90% of people who take a cruise for the first time will go on a cruise again. That certainly says something about how good a holiday this is. And it really is. You've got all of the facilities of a top hotel, with excellent dining and entertainment available, just as if you were staying in the West End of London. Best of all, depending on the cruise itinerary you've chosen, you'll wake up to a brand new port of call - or even a brand new country - every single day. On a cruise ship, it seems as if you don't travel to your destination; your destination comes to you.
Dining Onboard?
Dining on almost all cruise ships is included in the cruise price, except on no-frills lines.
Traditionally, the ships' restaurants organise two dinner services per day and passengers are allocated a set dining time for the entire cruise, but a recent trend is to allow diners to dine whenever they want and some cruise lines have specialty restaurants that require pre-booking and cover charges may apply.
Besides the dining room, there is also a casual buffet-style eatery often open 24 hours that offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks. There are also numerous bars and nightclubs, where alcoholic beverages are charged extra, as most cruise lines prohibit passengers from bringing aboard and consuming their own alcohol (alcohol purchased duty-free is sealed and only returned to passengers when they disembark).
Other on-board facilities?
Most modern cruise ships feature the following facilities:
- Casino - Only open when the ship is in open sea
- Spa
- Fitness center
- Shops - Only open when ship is in open sea
- Library
- Theatre with Broadway style shows
- Cinema
- Indoor and/or outdoor swimming pool
- Hot tub
- Buffet restaurant
- Lounges
- Gym
- Clubs
Some ships have bowling alleys, ice skating rinks, rock climbing walls, miniature golf courses, video arcades, basketball courts, or tennis courts
Tip and Gratuities?
Depending on the cruise line you book with, some will include your tips in the fare, charge a compulsory service fee or expect you to tip your cabin steward and restaurant waiter on the last night. Our experts can advise you on what method the cruise line uses at the time of booking or quotation.
Am I too young or too old to Cruise?
Well the answer is no. All age groups are welcome and planned for on a cruise ship. You will be able to find a cruise that will give any age group from toddler to great grandmother a memorable holiday. Teenagers often say they have found it to be the best family holiday yet. If you don't have children or don't want to be around them whilst on holiday, there are some cruise ships that are adult only or won't have many children on board.
Great value for money?
Talk to anyone who's been on a cruise and they'll talk about what great value for money it is. So much is included in a cruise package; generally, all of your meals, accommodation, onboard activities, evening shows, combined with fantastic service.
In fact, it's probably only your drinks that'll you'll find the need to pay for.
What's more, you don't have to book a guided excursion in port, you can simply explore under your own steam, if you prefer.
Divide the cost by the number of days and you’ll get the price per night. That is usually a pretty good way of seeing what excellent value it is.
Too Formal?
It’s not what you are probably thinking, dressing up for breakfast, lunch and evening meal. Well, the truth is, it's entirely up to you. There are cruises for all sorts of people.
You can indeed experience the timeless elegance of cruise lines like Cunard and Silverseas where dinner jackets and dresses are part of the fun. But, there are many companies that offer an informal, let-your-hair-down type of holiday. Carnival Cruise Lines, for example, prides itself on shipboard fun, enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere. Norwegian Cruise Lines promotes their informal approach under the "Freestyle Cruising" brand. Other companies such as P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises offer passengers the option to sample both styles, a sort of ‘half and half’.
What Ship is right for you?
There are so many different types of ship on offer, ranging from the smaller, more intimate ships (200 – 500 passengers) to the larger extravagant ones (over 1,200 passengers). They all offer organised activities such as pool and deck games, quizzes, lectures and not forgetting the ever popular shuffle board. There is also a wide selection of facilities onboard, pools, fitness centres, libraries, boutiques, spas, casinos and bars. Larger ships sometimes even offer jogging tracks, golf simulators, climbing walls and bowling alleys.
Payments onboard?
A credit account system operates onboard, whereby you are given a card which you use to charge any purchases to your cabin. You then settle your bill at the end of the cruise.
Evening entertainment?
In the evening there is always plenty of entertainment onboard a cruise ship, such as comedy acts, theatre productions and musical shows. There is also usually a casino and a nightclub, as well as a wide selection of bars.
A choice of destinations?
There is such a wide choice of destinations to choose from on a cruise such as the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Northern Europe or even more exotic places such as Alaska, the Far East, Hawaii, Australasia, South America and the Indian Ocean. Of course, if you want a flavour of all these destinations on one cruise, then you can try a longer World Cruise!
Don’t like Flying?
If flying is not for you, there is also the option to depart from a UK port. As soon as you arrive at the port your holiday begins - no need to waste your holiday queuing at the airport or waiting for transfers. Many customers are worried about seasickness but most ships are so well stabilized that you can hardly feel it moving at all.
Going Solo?
With an ever-increasing market for individual travellers, cruising solo is becoming more and more popular and is an ideal way for single travellers to meet other people in a safe and secure environment.
Although some single travellers are initially a little apprehensive when booking their first solo voyage, once they have tried it they know that there will no longer be any other way to travel. With memories of once-in-a-lifetime destinations, luxurious facilities, and many new friends made along the way – cruising really is the best way to travel as a solo passenger.
We at Premier Travel pride ourselves on having the experience and expertise to help solo travellers chose the right cruise for them, and at the right price.
Not only are you invited to share your dining table with fellow passengers but many cruise lines also organise cocktail parties for single travellers.
Giving it a go?
So, how do you try out a cruise if you're interested, but feeling unsure? Choose a short itinerary, sailing close to home. That way, you've not made a big commitment in terms of cost, or time away. If it turns out that it's not for you, no great loss.
What you'll probably find, though, like over 90% of the other passengers on board with you, is that you'll be back for more.
