Tenerife
As one of the largest of the islands there is plenty to see and do if you want more than a relaxing day at the beach. Take in the beauty of Mount Teide, the botanical gardens or the splendour of the Orotava Valley, or if retail therapy is more your thing then head to the various typical Spanish shopping centres or international department stores.
Lanzarote
You may think that there isn’t much to do other than bask on the beaches this island offers, however for the more adventurous there is the Timanfaya National Park boasting more than 50 kilometres of lunar like craters in a stunning volcanic landscape, or for a gentle stroll, the capital Arrecife offers pretty cobbled streets and blinding white houses with bright shutters and balconies draped with blooming flower baskets.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is probably best known for the rolling sand dunes of Maspalomas, termed a mini Sahara by the sea. But often described as a ‘continent in miniature’ thanks to it diversity of landscapes, plants and marine life. At the centre of the island, rising above scented pine forests, is the mountainous Cumbre and outcrops like Roque Nublo which is one of the highest points in Gran Canaria offering views across to Tenerife on a clear day.
La Gomera
The capital San Sebastian is traditionally regarded as the last stop that Christopher Columbus made before his journey to America, being a picturesque little town that you can imagine yourself in in times gone by. Being one the smallest islands does not mean there is nothing to experience. More than a tenth of the island is made up of the Garonjay National Park created by steep gorges, rocky outcrops and lush vegetation. Due to the landscape the local people have developed a unique form of communication that travels over long distances and across the valleys – they whistle to each other rather like yodelling in alpine areas.
La Palma
This compact island is dominated by the Roque de los Muchachos which soars 2,500 metres giving views for miles in all directions. If you are looking for something a little more genteel, then the capital Santa Cruz is small enough to explore and enjoy long lingering lunches just like the locals. The historical old quarter is where to go if you are after a little bit more, visit the town hall which a 16th century renaissance building or the Iglesia de El Salvador is a magnificent 16th century church, both worth an exploration.
At what time to travel?
The climate is favourable all year round but most cruises operate in the autumn, winter and spring when other destinations are not as reliable. Being in the middle of the Atlantic, they enjoy steady ocean breezes which are a welcome relief if visiting in the height of the summer or while enjoy the various excursions.
