Baltic Cruises - Ports of call

St Petersburg

This old Russian capital is the highlight of a cruise for many. With so much to see and do most cruise lines spend at least 2 days here giving you the chance to savour all the wonderful and flamboyant sights and experiences from the world-class ballet to Kunstkamera, Peter the Greats collection of curiosities . From the Peterhof Palace, Hermitage Museum and the Church of the Blood to the Mariinsky Theatre and the array of elegant palaces.

Tallinn

With its picturesque medieval old town, this former Russian occupied city is a joy. Wander the cobbled streets, visit the magnificent Baroque palace or even the Kadriorg Art Museum. Following the Singing Revolution of 1988 the local art scene has boomed, the best place to experience this is the Estonian Art Museum where past and present artists are displayed.

Helsinki

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, established in 1550, is a small and compact city with a relaxed and quirky style, having been recreated by the Tsars as a miniature St Petersburg. The city is filled with neoclassical buildings and over 100 museums and galleries just waiting to be explored, featuring artists both present and past. Many of the attractions are within walking distance of each other making it easy to explore. The centre is built on a beautiful archipelago creating a very special atmosphere.

Stockholm

An island capital offering a feeling of space, light and fresh air. The National Art Museum is an impressive collection of art and also furniture collated from the country’s royal palaces, there is also the open-air Skansen Museum. If you want something a bit different from the museum how about the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace.

Copenhagen

Think of Copenhagen and most people would recall the statue of Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid or the Tivoli Gardens but there is much more to see and do:- The new Opera House, designed by a local architect has a striking design and located right by the harbour, or take a wander around the former sailor’s district of Nyhavn with gabled houses and al fresco restaurants. Several stunning churches are open for viewing including the Golden Church and Church of Our Saviour.

At what time to travel?

The Baltic region enjoys the seasons very much like we do, with cruises operating in the warmer summer months, in-between May and August and just like here we would always recommend being prepared and to pack some rainwear. A few winter cruises are offered which allow for the beautiful Christmas markets this region can offer.

Other ports of call’s include:

Riga, Berlin (Warnemunde), Aarhus, Visby, Bornholm, Alborg, Saaremaa, Gdynia, Kalmar, Turku.
