Australasia Cruises - Ports of call

Sydney

Other than the famous opera house, the Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach Sydney has other sights if you are looking for something a bit different to the norm. Go to the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains and ride a cable car over the ancient ravines and forests of the Jamieson Valley – the Grand Canyon of Australia. For the animal lovers there is Featherdale: a unique wildlife centre set in a natural bush setting. This experience allows you to hand-feed a kangaroo, wallaby or emu, enjoy a face-to-face encounter with a friendly koala and discover the parks fascinating family of more than 2,200 animals, birds and reptiles.

Darwin

The smallest, least populated and most northerly of Australia’s state capitals: One of the most modern cities, due to being heavily affected by Japanese bombings (the same fleet that attacked Pearl Harbour) during WWII and Cyclone Tracy, which destroyed many of the old stone buildings. A quirky outpost boasting numerous museums, botanical gardens and Adelaide River, home to the famous jumping crocodiles.

Hobart

Hobart in Tasmania is the second oldest state capitol in Australia: It is backed by Mount Wellington and is situated on the banks of the Derwent River. Formally a penal settlement, reminders of which can be visited at Port Arthur. Take a trip out to, what is classed as the protype to Port Arthur, Richmond Gaol, within the historical village of Richmond. For a less haunting experience try wine tasting, Bonorong Wildlife Centre or walk in the treetops at Tahune Forest Airwalk.

Dunedin

Take a trip to the Otago Peninsula where you can spot the royal albatross and yellow-eyed penguin, which is native only to New Zealand. For a trip back in time take the train through the Taieri Gorge on a romantic trip crossing 19th-century cast-iron bridges and through numerous mountain tunnels. Disembark at historic Dunedin Railway Station to visit New Zealand's only castle. Larnach Castle boasts English tiles, Venetian glass and a 3,000-square-foot ballroom. For something completely different and for those with a sweet tooth, Cadbury World is close by.

Auckland

The largest and most populated city in New Zealand, where a huge 31% of the country’s population live. Whether you are looking for relaxation, shopping, history or nature, Auckland can offer it all. Take in the Auckland Museum for the world’s largest collection of Maori and Polynesian artefacts. Take to the water for a dolphin and whale watching tour or for the more adventurous sail aboard an Americas Cup-class racer, where passengers become crew. With so much to see and do you will wish you had more time here.

At what time to travel?

Our winter season is their summer and therefore the best time to explore ‘Down Under'. New Zealand has a climate quite similar to ours while northern Australia is quite tropical so you will need to bear in mind the variations when taking a trip.

Other ports of call’s include:

Melbourne, Perth, Port Douglas, Broome, Adelaide, Christchurch, Wellington, Tauranga.
